Inner ring distance challenge
Several times each season the Inner Ring session is run as a Distance Challenge time trial rather than the usual coached session. Rather than racing against one another, riders complete a specific number of laps, depending on age, whilst being timed. We record the time taken to complete their laps and publish the results on the website. This allows riders to compare their individual results from previous attempts, see how they are improving throughout the season, and to set themselves new challenges!
Riders are given a race number so that our volunteer timers can record their laps and overall time. The number should be pinned on the bottom left of their tops and returned at the end of the session. Riders are set off individually at 10 second intervals within their age groups. With lots of riders on the track we greatly appreciate as much assistance as possible from parents to help start riders and count laps.
Please ensure your child knows which age group they are in to help speed things up!
- U8 – 6 laps
- U10 – 12 laps
- U12 – 18 laps
As the distance challenge is run by age group, whilst waiting for their distance challenge to start the other riders take part in fun group activities led by our coaches.
When we publish the results on the website the riders are awarded a bronze, silver, gold or platinum result depending on their times. The times required to meet bronze, silver, gold or platinum can be viewed in our distance challenge standards below. Note that from 2017 we only use these standards for Inner Ring and the U14/U16 Outer Ring riders now do the 10 mile time trial.
N.B. From 2019 season we have set new benchmarks to reflect the fact that children’s bikes and skills have improved.
Historical results are recorded in a Google Sheet and can be viewed using the links below:
Outer ring – 10 mile time trial
We have a different distance challenge event for riders in the Under 14 and Under 16 categories: the 10 mile time trial. This is the staple distance for regular club time trials all over the UK and the PPYCC 10 mile distance challenge is a great introduction to this challenging but rewarding distance, with many of our riders going onto compete in local, regional and national time trial events. Riders are welcome to bring rollers/turbos to help warm up.
1 lap time trial
Occasionally we also run 1 lap time trials and these are also recorded and published below.

PPYCC is a member of the London South Time Trials, please see their website for information on how to get involved in Time Trialling and events to take part in: www.londonsouthdc.org.uk
