News from past-member Felix English for current members of PPYCC part 1

Many of you will know of our past-member Felix English who continues his adventure as a professional bike rider in his team TrackProject.ie which he shares with fellow team mate Mark Downey. Felix has written to us to share some of his thoughts about his journey in cycle sport and to tell us about his plans for the future. We will share his story over the next few days. The first edition Felix sent on his 25th birthday whilst aboard a flight.

“I am currently sat on my flight from Mallorca to Berlin for the UEC European Elite Track Championships. It’s been an intense few months of training with little time for rest – a normal week consisting of around 20 hours training on the road, 5 hours training on the track, 4 hours in the gym and with the odd Wattbike session thrown in for good measure. However, as long and tough as it can sometimes seem I know it’s all worth it. I grew up in a small village just outside of Lewes but was fortunate enough to be introduced to PPYCC when I was 13 years old. I was told to go down and check out the Wednesday track league and after doing so, knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I started off racing on my Dad’s old 1970’s steel road bike with toe-straps and football boots with the studs removed. Not the flashiest setup but it was enough for me to fall in love with the sport. Once the league was over, I started attending the Saturday morning sessions run by Anthony and was fortunate enough to have made great friends and learnt a lot.”

PPYCC Young Volunteers

A big well done and thank you to Adam Churchill, Josh Ballinger, Lloyd Costello and Rahul Fortescue Talwar, who completed a Cycling Award for Young Volunteers (CAYV) study day on Monday.

The British Cycling CAYV programme supports young people to build their leadership and communication skills in a practical environment, and provides them with the opportunity to develop a broad range of skills across a varied range of roles and activities within cycling.

By volunteering time to the club, Adam, Josh, Lloyd and Rahul will be supporting the rest of PPYCC’s volunteer team to continue to provide excellent cycling opportunities to our riders! They are all motivated to gain their Gold CAYV Award, in total providing 36 hours of volunteering each.

Current volunteer list and times for our cross race at Happy Valley this Sunday 29th October

Inner Ring Saturday 28th – Distance Challenge

The final Inner Ring session for our 2017 season will be a Distance Challenge. Please check out your results from the previous distance challenges and let’s try for as many personal bests as possible.

We’ll start with the u8s 6 laps, u10s 12 laps and U12s 18 laps. Riders will be set off individually at 10 second intervals. Whilst waiting for your distance challenge to start we’ll run a timed hill climb challenge.

We really need some helpers for next Sunday’s cross race

Hi PPYCC supporters,

If you can help and we don’t have your name on our list below please let Anthony know your availability for next Sunday. We have roles from 07.30 to 17.00 with our greatest need being setting up which finishes by 11.00.

The message below has already been sent to  some volunteers.

Your name may be on the list below to help at our Cross race next Sunday. We are pretty short of helpers, especially for setting up in the morning which starts from 07.30. Would you:

  1. Confirm if your availability below is correct
  2. Let me know if you are not listed and you are able to help.
  3. No need to reply if you are unavailable and not on the list below.

The two cross events raise enough funds to pay for our track hire for almost the entire year.

That’s all.

Anthony

Inner Ring Saturday 21st – cancelled

Due to the strong winds forecast tomorrow morning we have take the decision to cancel the Inner Ring session. That doesn’t mean that training has to wait until next week – if you have a turbo trainer it’s an ideal opportunity to do a quality session indoors.

We’ll be back the following Saturday for the final session of the season and it’s going to be a distance challenge !

Hill Climb Racing News: a win for Lloyd Costello

Three  PPYCC riders competed in the Butts Lane Hill Climb event at Willingdon last Saturday. There was a field of forty riders with a mix of juvenile, juniors, adults, seniors and veterans.  All three PPYCC riders had a good ride putting in a lot of effort and hard work to reach the summit in a good time.  Observers at the summit, including riders in all categories, were in a state of exhaustion and many collapsed once over the finishing line.
Results for the PPYCC riders are :- Francis Schofield finished 27th with a time of 5.04, James Gilmore 25th with a time of 5.01 and Lloyd Costello 21st with a time of 4.49. We are delighted that Lloyd’s time of 4.49 was the fastest time in the juvenile category giving him first place. Congratulations to Lloyd, and thanks to him, Francis and James for representing the club further afield.

London Youth Track League 2017/18, Lee Valley Velodrome

This week the London Youth Track League kicked off at Lee Valley Velodrome.

PPYCC were well represented with 6 riders riding in the first weeks racing.  Josh Ballinger, Rahul Fortescue Talwar and Josh Golliker in the U14s Category and Finn Anderson-Grout, Tom Pugh-Morgan and Luca Stone in the U16s Category.  Tow more PPYCC riders, Dylan Hicks and Jacob James will be joining for the next event.

All performed incredibly well over 4 races.  Unfortunately Josh G was taken out by another rider crashing in race 3 so had to miss race 4 due to injury. He has a nice new race suite to look forward to. All races included a field of 28 riders which made for some extremely exciting racing Especially in the points races
