Member news [from the last century]

We have recently learned of a family connection between club member Sam Buchanan and his great-grandfather, Maurice Lardy, who was a very keen cyclist from a very young age in France during the last century. He was a  cycling club member in his teenage and adult years and is pictured with his team mates before and after a race which he is recorded as having won that day. Maurice was a great supporter of the Tour de France and Sam’s French mother, Carine, can remember vividly watching Le Tour with Maurice every summer. Maurice followed up his cycling career on the bike by creating the first gym in France in the 60s and helping as a physio at cycle races. He also completed L’Etape du Tour on several occasions. Maurice cycled well into his 70s but unfortunately did not get the opportunity to meet great-grandson Sam. For Sam, Maurice’s memory is a great inspiration  and we are sure Maurice would be extremely proud to see what a keen and competitive cyclist his son is. In the fantastically nostalgic photos Maurice is the middle member of the group of 3. The photos are most likely from the 1950s Carine informs us.

A note to our own members is that Carine has very fond memories of watching and helping Maurice fix and clean his bike after his Sunday rides. We hope our members maintain their bikes equally well!
