Distance Challenge Results

Firstly, thank you to the coaches and parents who helped with the distance challenge on Saturday and of course well done to all the riders who took part, many for the first time.

I’d also like to recognise the supportive spirit shown by Hayden and William who interrupted their own distance challenge with 15 of their 18 laps completed to help Skeff who had touched wheels and crashed. Well done boys and we knocked 1 minute off your time to allow for this.

Please see below link to the distance challenge results for 2017 and hopefully we’ll have time to run a final distance challenge before the end of the year.

Inner Ring Saturday 9th September

It’s a very wet Friday night but forecast to be dry and sunny Saturday morning. Due to the mountain bike trip this weekend there will be no formally coached session at the track tomorrow morning. However, we are planning on running a distance challenge for the inner ring riders.

Riders will sign on as usual and then have a warm up on the track. Following the warm up the riders will take on their distance challenge U8s – 6 laps, U10s – 12 laps and U12s 18 laps.

The distance challenge will be run as a time trial, riders set off individually at 10 second intervals. As this is a time trial there is no group riding or slipstreaming.

Please make sure bikes and helmets have been checked and the riders have a drink and a snack, they’ll need it after they finish !

NO Outer Ring session this Saturday 9th September

As previously advertised, PPYCC has an overnight trip this weekend, and therefore there will be NO Outer Ring session this weekend. However, if you are not joining the trip, we can suggest some Saturday morning cycling alternatives!!……

  1. Ride some laps/join PPYCC friends for some training at the Velodrome 10.30-11.30 until……This week is British Science week, and science journalist Max Glaskin is leading a cycling science ride, ending at Preston Park Velodrome for some experiments investigating tyre rolling resistance and air resistance. This will include a rider on a recumbent bike who will be challenging riders to keep up with him on their upright bikes!

All PPYCC members are very welcome to join the experiments, which will be held 11.30-12 noon at the Velodrome.

2. Join PPYCC for some, or all, of the mountain bike ride to Gumber Bothy (you will need to be able to get back without the club later in the day if you are not joining the overnight stay)

3. Organise your own road ride with PPYCC friends (only with parental permission)

Train as a PPYCC Young Volunteer in October half-term

British Cycling offers members the opportunity to attend a free course to become a club volunteer and gain certification for supporting the club which can also be counted towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Cycling Award for Young Volunteers is aimed at 14 – 16 years olds and provides good developmental progression for individuals within sport but based on non-physical attributes.

The club is targeting the next course in October on Monday 23rd October at Cyclopark in Kent. With several members already committed to attending we hope to get a high turnout of volunteers who can then work their way through the award by supporting our activities at the club.

With the club promoting two cyclo-cross races, a club road racing championships and an AGM through October and November there is plenty of opportunity to start volunteering.

Members, why not enrol on the course alongside one or more club friends and then share the travel to the course?

To enrol use this link: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/course/details/3741

To find out more refer to this leaflet: CAYV FAQ or speak to an existing club volunteer.

The CAYV allows older members to apply to be part of British Cycling’s National Youth Committee. Past member Josh Fanner held this distinction for two years regularly attending events organised at the National Cycling Centre and elsewhere.

Instructions for club trip to Gumber Bothy this Saturday.

(no attendees without prior notice but we still have a few places left if you want to get in touch)

Please read carefully

For those of you cycling to Gumber Bothy

We will meet at the Preston Park track at 9.30am for signing on. We aim to ride out by 10am.

You will need an overnight bag containing warm clothing, spare cycling kit, sleeping bag, towel, toiletries. If you don’t want to sleep in the dormitories you can bring a tent and all that is needed go with it. The dorms have padded mattresses but I don’t think there are pillows. Perhaps bring any empty pillow cases to stuff with clothing.

Overnight bags will be taken to Gumber in the support van.

You can drop your bags off at ‘sign on’ on Saturday or you can deliver them to my house (90 Beaconsfield Villas BN1 6HE) on Thursday /  Friday evening  Text in advance 07434691462 or you can drop off at my work on Thursday /  Friday ( Infinity Foods 46 Dolphin Road Shoreham BN43 6PB) Text in advance 07434691462

For those of you arriving by car or public transport

The Bothy and campsite are a two-mile walk from the nearest car park at Bignor Hill or Northwood (grid ref SU 959098) and there is no vehicle access to the site. I think you can get a bit nearer with a car to drop off gear but not for parking. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO BRING A VEHICLE ON SITE. The cycling group aim to arrive by 4pm

You will need an overnight bag containing warm clothing, sleeping bag, towel, toiletries. If you don’t want to sleep in the dormitories you can bring a tent and all that is needed go with it. Visitors occupying the Bothy barn are welcome to use all the following facilities: Toilets, showers, sleeping dorms, kitchen, BBQ, bike racks, pay phone, camping field and drying room available. Visitors to the campsite have access to the same facilities apart from the sleeping dorms. Please also note that although the kitchen and Bothy are very well equipped there are no electric power outlets/ plug points on site and no fridge. There are lights but bringing a small torch is a good idea.

A vegetarian evening pasta meal and morning breakfast will be provided. You are welcome to bring any snacks or extras. Alcohol is allowed for over 18’s but I won’t be bringing for all.  If you have any concerns or questions about let me know.

Jojo Martin establishes new club record

PPYCC has no official record recognition but we are now introducing them due to the exploits of members this season. Initially anyone that wishes to claim a club record needs to submit to the PPYCC Committee the record you wish to claim and evidence of its achievement. Any claim will need to be in an event which uses qualified Timers.

We are initially aware of the following two club records.

PPYCC Member’s 10 mile TT Record

Joseph Martin 21.53 GHS regional championships Steyning, June 2017

PPYCC Member’s 25 mile TT Record

Joseph Martin 56.38 at the Southern Counties championships August 2017

A New PPYCC Distance Challenge

In a week where we have seen some amazing endurance exploits we introduce a new Distance Challenge for riders in the Under 14 and Under 16 categories. This is the 10 Mile Distance Challenge and results from the first [and future] attempts can be seen in our Activities section in the TT page or by using the link below.

We would like to congratulate the first riders who attempted this new challenge and particularly those who are from the Under 12 category who all achieved the Under 14 benchmark.

Cyclo-cross seasons starts at Stanmer Park tomorrow

Brighton Excelsior host Round 1 of the new cycle-cross season at Stanmer Park tomorrow. They always put on a good show so turn up to race, to cheer on or to just feast on the goodies they sell [too cheaply, but don’t tell them, shhhh keep it quiet].

Local bike company Upgrade, who make Kinesis bikes are making a big deal of the prize presentations so why not make it a family day in Stanmer Park.
