Welcome to Preston Park Youth Cycling Clubs website:

By Bridget Allen - Your Mildenhall correspondent

The first PPYCC campers arrived at Mildenhall on Friday afternoon when quickly tents were pitched and  dinner materialised thanks to our very own quartermaster and chef Mark (Anderson). Saturday morning was a family mountain bike to Thetford forest led by Anthony despite being a fun event, competition to stay in the front was hot between Evelyn (Parle) and the young Mustins (Zach and Louis). Saturday also saw Brock competing in the youth  grass track events.

Brock pensively preparing for a big final !! Brock thoughtful at the start line.

Each afternoon the younger children took part in sports on the track; running, sack and obstacle races, and over the weekend we had medalists in nearly all the age catagories, these races were the highlight of the weekend for some of the younger children. They also enjoyed the free bouncy castle, face painting and puppet show keeping them busy so their parents could enjoy the track racing. Saturday evening we had a great BBQ - thanks Mark.

Sunday morning was the cyclo cross event first to go were Joe (Hill) and Corrie (Anderson) who came a brillliant 5th and 6th in the under 10s.

Next up were the seniors who ride the cyclo cross as a madison ( in pairs) this saw Anthony (Rogers) riding with his daughter Theo, Andy (Parle) riding with his son Gabriel, Tim Hill riding with Tim Mustin and Brock (Duncomb-Rogers) riding with Neil (MacClelland) The course incorporated the grass track and then disappeared off into some woodland ajoining the campsite. The PPYCC fan club positioned themselves in the wood with a good view of crashes into trees and fallings off (yes, we saw you Anthony and Tim M). The riders did laps of the course changing team member each lap it was fairly difficult to tell where ever one was once the race got going but everyone had good fun and it is fair to say the Brock and Neil were our fastest riders.

Sunday afternoon and the seniors were racing again on the grass track, various events including the World Championships of the Hoop Race, only ever run at Mildenhall, it’s a bit like musical chairs  with no music and no chairs - plastic hoops. Riders circle the track until the whistle blows and then they have to get their back wheel in a hoop. Only one rider per hoop and you can’t go backwards if you over shoot you have to go round again. Gradually hoops are removed and with them riders until there is a winner. It seemed that a lot of cheating was required to suceed in this event. Watch out maybe we will see this event at Preston Park.

Sunday evening and after several servings of pasta and homemade rattouille sauce (yum yum) twelve of us set off to take part in the Mildenhall Rally pub quiz held at the cricket club next door to the campsite. I’d like to report that at least one of our three teams figured in the top five but sadly not; dead politicians not our strong suit.

Monday our last day and the big event the team pursuit last year our team of Brock, Anthony, Catherine and Andy came  third so we had a position and our reputation to defend. This year sadly no Catherine she had to go home on Sunday night so Tim Mustin bravely stepped forward to fill the vacant fourth spot in the team.

Everyone was anxious as we drew Mildenhall CC - the host club and previous winners for the heats ( fastest four teams to race for the medal positions) The boys did brilliantly towed round by Brock they placed the fourth fastest time and put out Mildenhall CC. So the race for the bronze medal was against Maldon CC who had posted the third fastest time, race faces on the boys went for it. Tim bravely hanging in for four laps and then letting the others go for the line sadly they didn’t quite make it but they gave Maldon a good race and it was a great result. WELL DONE.

So then all that remained was to pack up and go home, tired and smelly having had a thoroughly enjoyable bank holiday weekend. Hope to see you there in 2009 !!

The Evening Argus were present at the last track meeting of the season last Wednesday. There are some photos and a summary in the ‘Youth In Action’ supplement in today’s early edition which may be of interest to those present.

On Friday we have our regular track session for those 12 years to adult [with the last of the season’s track league races next week this may well be the final of these sessions].

On Saturday we are celebrating the start of the Olympics with our own cycling pentathlon. See the events below and look out for the new Olympic t-shirts we have to give to the first 30 people to sign on.

  3. Pit stop team challenge [team members must change their front wheels]
  4. Wheel shove ha’penny [roll your wheel to score highly]
  5. Hoop race [ a crazy game just like musical chairs but without the music and without the chairs]

We have a fantastic offer for new members. If your child is a new member of PPYCC this year then we have funding from the Kellogg’s ‘Get the Balance Right’ fund to fund one parent to join the club for each child who joins; and they have given us enough funding for 10 memberships. This may not sound very special when you consider that club membership is free, however you also have to be a British Cycling member to join PPYCC and for adults a silver membership costs £22 and that is what we are offering to cover. Kellogg’s feel that involving children in sport is important for their health and life opportunities and research shows that when parents are also involved in sport children are more likely to stay active as they get older.

Apart from benefitting your children your membership will also allow you to wear the fantastic strip of PPYCC and, perhaps more importantly, give you third party liability insurance and legal advice and support amongst other various benefits.

To benefit from this offer just join up to BC on line and we will refund the first 10 adult memberships.

 Anthony

ps. If you wish to go for gold membership then we will refund £22 of the cost.

This Saturday 26th July we have our annual mtb ride followed by a bbq at Saddlescombe Manor. We are meeting at Summer Down car park at 09.45 for both a faster and a slower mtb ride. The bbq is from 12.00 at the Manor but people are asked to not park near the Manor, as it is a National Trust property, but instead stay up at Summer Down or another car park. It is limited to 30 riders/family and the charge is £2.50 for all. Anyone can take part in the ride but you need to confirm attendance at the bbq by contacting Andy on andy@ppycc.org.uk

Saturday August the 2nd is cancelled due to lack of coaches.

ClothingOrderAnt Like us many of you will have been wondering what has happened to the club clothing order. The news is disappointing as we have discovered there has been a problem with the order and we need to start over again. We will send out the original order unless you let me [Anthony] know that you wish to cancel or change it,  similarly you can make a new order. In both cases you need to let me know by by Monday 4th August. An order form is linked here too.

Many of our members took part in the British Cycling holiday programme last summer and loved it, see below for lots of activities this summer.

Dunsfold Park (Home of the Top Gear test track). 31st July and 1st August. These will be road bike sessions, using part of the Dunsfold Park perimeter road. Activities will look at Echelons, through and off, cornering, sprinting and more. Riders will need to bring road bikes for these sessions.

Preston Park 6th and 7th August (advanced) 10.00 to 3.00 and 18th and 19th August (beginner/intermediate) 9.00 to 13.30. The sessions on the 6th and 7th will look at racing skills for more experienced riders and will be ideal preperation for anybody planning to ride Regional Omniums or the National Championships. The sessions on the 18th and 19th will focus on beginners and those riders who are less experienced on the track with more of a skills focus.

Holmbury St Mary 28th and 29th August. The area surrounding Holmbury St Mary contains some of the best Mountain biking trails in the South East with a mix of technical descents and climbs, fireroads and singletrack, mud, sand and gravel all within reach of the base for this programme without touching a road! The riding will be fairly advanced so riders will need to have some experience on a mountain bike-if in doubt, please give me a call.

As always, all of the programmes nationwide can be found using the links at the following page so if you are not in the South East, click on the following link.

More programmes are being added all the time as the details are finalised so keep checking back and remember, we will also be running programmes over the winter.

For Sale: Past PPYCC member Patrick’s old mountain bike. It’s a 24inch wheel, alloy Ridgeback. Would suit a child from around 7-11 years old. It’s been customised with lightweight alloy bars and nearly new Deore chainset and gears. Replacement value is between £275 and £300.00. We are looking for £80.00 ONO to get it out of the shed. I recently stripped and re built it, so it’s in good shape with only minor scratches to the paint work. Tyres are also nearly new.

Contact details are Chris Hough 01273 478144. and c.hough@citylit.ac.uk.

Anthony says: “this is an excellent bike and a good opportunity for a club member to be able to buy it.” See a picture at this link. img_4478.JPG
