Day 1 & 2, Assen, European Junior Cycle Tour. Prologue & Criterium

Day 1’s Prologue covering a 1.7km timed distance started in the woods just outside Assen and finished at the main cycle arena.  Comprising of sealed road and cobbles through-out the course.  Freddie Newman and Josh Ballinger we’re in the early category 7 group which started at 8am, Josh starting at 8:04am and Freddie at 8:11.  Luke Goodwill, cat 5, started at 9:23am.  All had good times for their first experience of Assen, and the famous cobbles to race on.  All had good times for their first experience of Assen, and the famous cobbles to race on.

Day 2 saw the Criterium. which for cat 7 riders was 16 *1.7km laps of Assen town centre.  For Luke in cat 5 it was 11 laps.

The cat 5 race was one of the first and unfortunately Luke got caught up in a crash, although he managed to get himself back up, in his haste he missed that during the crash his front quick release had been opened.  He still managed to finish the race without stopping to fix this and was awarded a lap due to the crash.

Cat 7s were next and a field of 70 riders.  There was a crash early on the first lap which split the field with Freddie in the leading group and Josh in the second group.  Freddie stayed with the peloton eventually finishing in 24th place.  Josh stayed with he second

unch finishing in 55th place.  The eventual winner of the race finished 42 seconds ahead of the peloton .
