Old meets new

During our Sunday morning road ride yesterday we climbed Firle Beacon in what might be the last summer bike ride. At the top we were approached by the cyclist in the far right of the picture. Other than our coach Anthony Rogers it is suspected that no one else in the club knows who he is. However  this is Norman Wright, and it was Norman, along with British Cycling National Paralympic Coach Tony Yorke [now sadly deceased], who set up the first youth cycle club at Preston Park. The club ran for over a year without any official status, nor name. However eventually, whilst Norman was still coaching and Anthony Rogers had joined him, Preston Park YCC was created and named. Norman retired from the club, not least because the distance in travelling from Heathfield to coach was prohibitive. However the club is indebted to Norman’s passion for the sport and commitment to the future. We were also pleased to find he still rides his bike and is not daunted by the steep slopes of Firle Beacon.
